Discussion:
Old film
(too old to reply)

Yes, I know it has been asked probably a million times before; just
wondering. :-)

Sydney climate, no special care.

Cleaning up I found the following old unused 35mm film:-

Konica Minolta Monochrome VX400 5 rolls use by01/2007. 400 ASA

(This film is for colour processing only; poor man's b&w.)

Konica Minolta Centuria 200 ASA colour use by 03/2008 and 06/2007

Fujifilm ASA 400 Superia Xtra colour use by 03/2010

Kodak B&W for C41 colour processing undated in container. Not sure
what Kodak called this, as no brand name is on the metal canister that
I could see.

What do you guys reckon?

Want to get my old F3HP back into action, which runs still as sweet as
a nut. But must weigh about 2kg or more with the motor drive
attached!

Thanks as usual for any forthcoming replies.

Ah well, crank-up the old F3HP and shoot away! Those will work just fine,
particularly the B&W ones. Start with the colour stuff, particularly the
Centuria. That used to be a very fine film, it scanned REALLY well.

Use one, get it developed and printed and ask the guys that did the development
if it was OK or needed a bit more light. Old slide film usually needs a bit
more exposure but I don't think C41 is that sensitive. The B&W stuff will be
fine for a long time, so keep it for last.

Fotolab at 303 Pitt St does good work in this sort of conditions, ask John over
there to do the trial develop/print cycle for you and pay attention to what
comes out. Their scanner/printer can mask a lot of problems with the film, so
they are a good bet to use all that stuff.

And above all: enjoy using that film and gear. Or join the Sydney Analog

Most folks got tired of its constant abuse by a bunch of spam and scam artists
from Canon and pbase and pissed off to Flickr and a few other moderated forums.
Not just here: most of Usenet is dead.

Ah yes, I used to go there when I was at Sloptus, back in the days of the
spin-off into aus.culture.true-blue.
Gave up: too much noise and waaaaay too many trolls for my taste.
Haven't been back since. Maybe I should drop in once in a while...

Back to the subject - would a red filter enhance the C41 process B&W
at all? If not what filter?

IME, not as much as with traditional b&w emulsions. C41 responds to colours in
a different way than a pan or ortho classic b&w film. Not much, but enough to
notice a difference. But you certainly can use red and yellow for the usual
outcome. Here are some comments on the subject you might find useful:

Indeed! BW400CN is an amazing film, Kodak never had a clue how to market it...

Ah well, at least now they are out of the film market we might see some more of
Ilford and Fuji in filling in the gaps. Not that their offerings are any less,
they just need to take advantage of having Kodak and their silly double-edge
game out of the way. XP2 is a perfect substitute for Kodak's and Fuji has some
outstanding colour negative film that can easily be used for monochrome.

Sell it on eBay and use the money to get a nice digital camera. I'm sure some
fool'll buy it.

I have a Nikon F2. Weighs a ton (well, over 2 lbs. anyway). Hardly use it now.
Bought a FujiFilm S7000 about 8 or 9 years ago. What a nice change. Weighted
less than a pound. No huge pentaprism glass. I can't see the need for a DSLR.
The whole idea's dumb now. My next camera will be a Nikon P510. Less than $400
on Amazon and comes with 42x zoom. Beats lugging 3 or 4 different lenses around.

http://framework.latimes.com/2012/07/27/camera-review-nikon-coolpix-p510/

Has a video plus some example photos. I thought it was a reasonably decent
camera for the price and features. The S7000 was over $1,000 (duty-free) and
nowhere near as good. Only problem is the prices are rip-offs here. Amazon seems
to have better prices. Not sure if they come with an international warranty
though. Camera also does Full HD video. That's more or less de riguere but it
does mean you don't need both a video camera and a still camera (most video
cameras don't have the lens length this one does either).

Noise isn't a product of lens focal length. The max. focal length is about equal
to 1,000mm for a 35mm camera. Seems to be OK from the example photo. A fixed
length lens might be better but it's just not as versatile. Would be nice if the
lens was a vibration reduction one, perhaps a later model will.

As for your films, the older ones will have a lot of fog. From memory, colour
film get foggy faster (not 100% sure now). The B&W film might be OK but that
won't last.

I think your memory is more affected by fog than film is. True indeed
for 40 year old film. For 10 year old film? Nope. Unless it was stored
in the window sill...

Still the same, unfortunately. Bought my D80 years ago from a "grey"
importer, Nikon won't touch it. So I won't buy any more Nikons, no
matter what. Maybe they'll get the message...

Canon same same? Never tried them.

Problem changing brands is the lens - if you have a few of one brand,
that is; far too expensive to change over.

Not if you move to mirrorless: same image quality, can mount just about any lens
on them. I've even got MF lenses mounted in my m4/3!

Canon warranty is worldwide. Nikon warranty doesn't cover bodies, but as
much as Nikon Aus doesn't like people to know it, it does cover lenses..
If anyone has any issues with this, feel free to contact Nikon Japan and
explain the circumstances - they'll happily contact the local Nikon agent
and intervene on your behalf.

As to whether boycotts makes any difference - my experience with Nikon was
that expressing displeasure to the Mother Company well and truly *can* make
a difference. Maxwell were failing to support Nikon product recalls by not
putting recall info on the web and also alluding to lenses not being
warrantied - the parent company were less than impressed by this :)

Indeed. They weren't very impressed either when Maxwell refused to sell me a
special focusing screen for my F6, years ago. Apparently and according to the
local "support", it was not a current camera, Nikon "only sold dslrs". This was
a few years ago. Let's just say I got my screen pronto after a couple of emails
to Japan!

How much better is the F6 over the F5?

I have an F2 I was very happy with. I really wanted an F1 though because the
viewfinder showed more of the image. Don't recall the details now but with the
F1 you could see very close to 100% of what would be on the film. The F2 was a
little less. I remember joking at the time that the viewed image would get
smaller and smaller with newer models. ;-)

How much better is the F6 over the F5?
For me, night and day better. Mostly because:
1- It is a LOT lighter than the F5.
2- Comes with a built-in motor-drive that doesn't need a trailer to carry
3- The metering is heaps better than the F5's, with full matrix colour-aware
metering, full older Ai/AiS lens compatibility, as well as a superb spot meter.
4- The standard vanilla camera imprints shooting data in between frames as well
as keeping it in memory - which I can dump as a "csv" file and use with exinfo
or similar program in the PC for my scanned images. And it keeps exif info for
even Ai (non-CPU) lenses!
5- Fully compatible with ALL flash systems Nikon has ever put out, including the
latest dslr-era ones.
6- Electronically controlled and configurable from a menu system with a screen
in the back. Essentially, it's a D2 with a film sensor.
7- The frame counter although electronic lets me wind back a film mid-roll,
shoot another, then come back to the frame I stopped at before and continue
shooting. I can also manually wind back to any frame in a roll, double-expose
it and go back to the end again. Only the original F could do that before.

It is indeed a jewel of a camera, even by today's standards. Only wish I had
bought two bodies way back then, when they were going for peanuts because of the
digital craze. Nowadays the price has recovered and bargains are a lot harder...

The FM10 looks like a student's camera which Nikon will keep for many
years to come.

Had a look at the illustration of the F6 on Nikon Australia web site,
where exactly is the drive mechanism?

Inbuilt in the camera. Just like the F100's. But it also has a rewind crank,
unlike the F100. Which is handy to reposition film halfway through.
Wikipedia has a good description and Ken Rockwell's site has a detailed and
reliable review of it, although you gotta ignore the usual nonsense in his
writing style.
You can get it new from HK on ebay for around $1500, which is a much better
price than the insane $2500 here in Oz. And sometimes it shows up here second
hand for around that price.

Any idea why it doesn't cover bodies?

I remember when Mal 'Memphis Pants' Fraser visited Nikon in Japan, on a tour in
the '70s, they gave him a camera. I wonder what sort of warranty it had. ;-)

Aye, agree to a certain extent. Still, I must say film expired up to 5 years
has never caused me a problem. Mostly because I scan and I can correct small
casts at scan time. If I was using an enlarger, life would be a LOT harder...

My experiences with this was all with B&W film. I never tried with colour
although I still have a stock of old Kodachrome and Ektachome film. These all
expired in the 80s, so it's probably not even worthwhile bothering with (nobody
processes Kodachrome any more anyway) but the Ilford B&W films tended to fog
quite quickly.

Fog. Lots and lots of fog. Unless you kept it all refrigerated.
Post by f***@deadspam.com
Want to get my old F3HP back into action, which runs still as sweet as
a nut. But must weigh about 2kg or more with the motor drive
attached!
Have to be lot's of noise there?
You mean "lots", it's not possessive.
You are correct, Sir John, as usual.
Post by Dr Sir John Howard, AC, WSCMoF
Now what do you mean noise?
Digital noise in the scene if you shoot with lens at 42x zoom?
Reasonable review here
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikon-coolpix-p510
Check this one too -
http://framework.latimes.com/2012/07/27/camera-review-nikon-coolpix-p510/
The B&W film might be OK but that
won't last.
Last time I looked, Nikon (when run by Maxwell here) would not warrant
any product bought outside Oz; may have changed now Nikon flicked
them, but I doubt it.
They used to have an international warranty decades ago. I should check before I
buy though.
