I might have missed some replies -- did anyone give you
the actual measurements?

The size is variable -- 45-50mm in height and 35-40mm in width .

Yep but when you present yourself for the interview you better look like
the picture.

BTW You have for some time now been able to alter a photograph. Seen it
done a couple of times before :)

Gee, that means you can now doctor your image.
As an aside, the US states in its requirements for photos for
non-immigrant visas that it does not accept digital photos
(http://usembassy-australia.state.gov/consular/photorequire.html). I
assumed that this was because of the possibility of doctoring the
pics.

However, the standard US photo size is 50 mm x 50 mm and the trouble
starts when you try to get a suitable photo in Australia. No-one is
set up to do 50 mm x 50 mm passport photos with a non-digital method.
After stuffing around for a while to try and find someone, I called
the US consulate help line, said that no-one can do it non-digitally.
The woman on the line said " .. that's OK, we will accept a digital
photo." .. arghhhhh!!!.

(I have also since seen a web site that assists with US immigration,
that states the US will accept inkjet photos where the dots are not
visible.)

Once that was established, I went to the closest photo shop from work,
and then was spun a line about a passport photo costing $45. I
challenged this, and was assured that this price was because it was so
hard to do .. they had to take the photo, size it correctly and then
print it out. And that it was going to take 1 hour to perform all of
this. The owner of the shop proceeded to pull out his D-100 to take
the pic with. I baulked at this and moved on to another shop. Give
me a D-100, photoshop, and a printer, I could produce a 50 mm x 50 mm
photo inside 2 minutes.

I ended up at another place near by that charged 1/2 the price and
was a hell of a lot more friendlier.

The only person that can give you advice is the passport office. If you go
to the internet then you are silly.

Listen to Howard, his opinion will make sure you get a passport.

The only advice needed is that printed on the document you sign.
